The Barbering Program at the International Institute of Cosmetology covers topics like precision haircutting, coloring, texture services, shaving and grooming, and skincare. Modern and Innovative Curriculum for the Next Generation of Barbers

Learn the art and science of barbering from classroom lectures, demonstrations, personalized instruction, and a web-based learning platform called LAB. Our experienced instructors are committed to the success of each student. Because we want you to be able to take your knowledge and apply it directly to a future career, we stay on top of modern techniques and trends. At our barber school, you will feel 100 percent supported from enrollment through graduation and beyond. That is why we maintain excellent relationships with barbershops, salons, and other beauty businesses throughout Connecticut. You can attend career fairs, find job placement support, and experience real-world career preparation.

Our 1,000-hour Barbering Program covers the skills and theory you need to know to gain confidence as a barber. The state-approved curriculum prepares you to sit for the state exam, so you can pursue a professional barbering license. Our curriculum uses the Pivot Point Fundamentals: Barbering library as well as our own proprietary content.

How long does it take to complete the Barbering Program?

This 1,000-hour program can be completed in as little as 39 weeks.

Is financial aid available?

Federal financial aid is not available for this program at this time. If you need help financing your education, consider taking out a loan from your local bank, credit union, or a lender like Sallie Mae®. We also offer interest-free payment plans to our students. In addition, it could be well worth your time to pursue barber-related scholarships.

Can I apply if I am a homeschooled student?

Homeschooled students may be eligible for enrollment if they meet state law standards, provide a certificate of completion, and have a third party sign a statement verifying completion of homeschooling.

Do barbering students learn how to style hair?

Yes, you will learn many styling techniques on a variety of hair textures.

Do you learn about wigs in this program?

Making wigs is not covered in the barbering curriculum.

How do I decide between barbering and cosmetology?

That decision depends on a variety of factors. Many barbers focus on hair, specifically men’s hair and grooming. Cosmetologists may also focus on hair, but they usually have a different clientele that includes women, and they offer beauty services that women tend to prefer, such as hairstyling, coloring, facials, manicuring, and makeup. Visiting our school and seeing the programs in action could help you decide which program you prefer.

Check out the admissions requirements for our Barbering Program:

  • Be above the age of 17 at enrollment date.
  • Complete a personal interview with an admissions representative.
  • Complete a student application, including an application essay.
  • Pay a non-refundable application fee of $50.
  • Must be a high school graduate, have obtained a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or meet our school’s homeschool requirement.
  • Submit a copy of a high school diploma/official transcripts or equivalent, GED certificate, or homeschool certification.
  • Submit a copy of all of the following: Proof of date of birth (driver’s license or birth certificate) and verification of social security number.
